A \u2018positive cash flow\u2019 is when more money is coming in than going on; a \u2018negative cash flow\u2019 is the reverse of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">There are different types of cash flow; three that you should be aware of are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Net cash flow<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the most basic type of cash flow which considers net cash incomes and outgoings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Free cash flow<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the cash that is left after a business has paid capital expenditures and operating expenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Discounted cash flow<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 a cash flow which accounts for the time value of money by discounting it against a predetermined rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">It\u2019s not enough to simply have a budget which predicts how much cash will go in and out of your business, businesses must also try to predict&nbsp;<em>when&nbsp;<\/em>this cash will go in and out so that they know how much working capital will be available to them at any given time. This is known as a \u2018cash flow forecast\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Cash Flow Forecasting Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Cash flow forecasting enables you to predict the amount of working capital you will have at any given time, which you might need to pay your creditors or staff, purchase inventory stock, or pay your tax bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">If you have an accurate and complete cash flow, you should be able to predict when you\u2019ll have a surplus and when you\u2019ll have a deficit. This is important as it will help you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Identify potential shortfalls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Prevent or minimise the impact of these shortfalls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Utilise any cash surpluses effectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Access funding by proving you will be able to repay it in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Ensure you have cash on hand to meet your financial obligations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Types of Businesses Need a Cash Flow Forecast?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">All businesses require a cash flow forecast if they want to ensure they stay profitable and open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">However, there are some instances in which having an accurate and thorough cash flow forecast becomes even more important, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>When you\u2019re starting a new business<\/strong>. During this time, you\u2019ll likely have lots of expenses and overheads as you\u2019ll be spending money on marketing and growing your customer base. You\u2019ll also probably have minimal sales at this point and, as such, you may have a negative cash flow.
